The role of packaging and plastics in sustainable food production

food manufacturing companies

Food supply systems include long distances and several middlemen. Each stage of the food manufacturing companies, including production, processing, retail, and consumption, has a variety of societal and environmental consequences. Packaging can aid with the safe transportation of food and so plays an important part in the food chain. At the same time, as waste and needless resource consumption become more prevalent, packing techniques and the structure of supply networks are being scrutinized.

A rising tendency toward on-the-go lifestyles is also a major driver of food and beverage packaging use. Many single-use plastics come from take-out services and the quickly developing industry of e-commerce/delivery services. These food manufacturing companies create a unique difficulty since their convenience is connected to the widespread use of single-use plastics and, in many situations, an increased danger of pollution. The continued expansion of these services creates issues for creating a circular economy more broadly.

Sustainable packaging solution:

There is also a lot of discussion about how sustainable the packing material is. From this vantage point, avoiding utilizing plastic packaging may appear to be the most sustainable alternative and is frequently recommended as the best answer by most food manufacturing companies.

While eliminating packaging minimizes the use of plastic, many food products degrade quicker without it, increasing food waste and having an environmental effect. This product and packaging sustainability issue must be thoroughly examined in order to identify the best overall solution.

The challenge lies in quantifying how the options are weighed by these food manufacturing companies. In what circumstances is it more sustainable to utilize non-sustainable packaging materials? There are several unanswered questions.

Reuse, Recycle and Reduce:

By transforming the packaging designs into recyclable-ready solutions, focusing on pooling systems, and minimizing the quantity of packaging materials used, food manufacturing companies can reduce our environmental effect.

Food packaging, in our opinion, plays an important role in minimizing food waste, which has a considerably greater environmental impact than the packaging itself. We should never see packaging as a distinct identity; rather, it should be regarded as a highly useful component of the product.

Changing the packaging should never result in increased food waste. Quite the reverse. So, if packaging isn’t essential, it should not be used. And when packaging is absolutely necessary for preserving a product’s freshness and quality, food manufacturing companies should choose the most environmentally friendly option.

The goal is to employ 100% recyclable or reusable packaging.
